Body
Sat scoring the cricket with one side of my face in the sun and somehow decided I wasn't hot because I wasn't playing. By the drinks break my neck was sticky and I could feel the seam of the chair through my shorts every time I shifted. Stood up and my knee carried on bouncing for a second, even with nobody's table to annoy. The water in my bottle was warm but I drank nearly all of it. I had been watching the overs so carefully I hadn't noticed how thirsty I was. Moved the chair into the bit of shade behind the scorer's table. Same view of the pitch, much less effort to keep my eyes open. Revolutionary planning.
Mind
One of the grade nines I tutor asked why I picked accounting, and I gave him a decent answer about the jobs you can do with it. Sounded like something from the university website. He said he likes geography but everyone tells him to choose things that lead somewhere, then went back to the exercise before I could decide what to say. I've been thinking about that word, somewhere. I know the graduate programmes I'd apply to and roughly what marks they want. I don't know what an ordinary Tuesday in one of those jobs feels like. Maybe I should ask someone who actually does it instead of reading another list of requirements. Not tonight though, there's a test.
Emotion
My girlfriend was laughing about something that happened with her friends in Pretoria, and I kept waiting for the part where I would understand why it was funny. I know the names now, not the people. She was having such a good time telling it that I said shame and laughed in the right places, then felt a bit outside the whole thing. I'm glad she's made friends, obviously. I just miss being there when the thing happens, not getting the summary at eleven when we're both tired. She asked why I was quiet and I said long day. It was a long day, but that wasn't really the answer. Anyway, we stayed on the call until her battery went flat.
