Mind
Trying to work out whether I can get to Halifax and back on Thursday without spending most of it waiting for a bus. Wrote the times on the back of an envelope and left room for the shopping, then Jean pointed out I'd used the school-day column for one journey and the holiday one for the other. Both in tiny print, naturally. Started again. Used to know when to leave without looking at owt, same driver would see you coming and wait. Now I can plan it all correctly and still be stood there if the first one's late. I'll take a book. Jean says take your hearing aids. Different problem, according to me.
Body
Raw out, but kitchen were warm enough once oven had been on a while. Stood peeling potatoes and realised I'd been leaning my hip against the cupboard for most of it. Moved the bowl to table and sat down. Jean said I looked like I were settling in for a shift. Better than dropping peelings everywhere because my fingers were still cold from walking the dog. They warmed up round the bowl after a bit. Got up to check the oven and my knee caught, then let go. Dinner were fine. Sat eating with both feet flat on floor, and for once nowt in me wanted getting up again straight away.
Emotion
Lad who used to be at the school stopped me near the shop. He's a grown man with a little girl now, but called me Mister Keys same as he used to, and she wanted to know why. He told her I'd opened every door in the place. Not quite, but no need to spoil a good account. Pleased me he'd remembered. Asked after his mum and got an answer I couldn't catch, so had to ask again instead of nodding and hoping. Jean said I were in a good mood when I came home. Told her I'd met someone. She waited for more, so I told her the little girl had wanted to see my keys. Only had two on me, poor show.
