Dad came in and watched a customer ask me about a parcel problem. Nothing unusual, sorted it, served the next person. Afterwards he said people know they can come here. Not that the shop was better, not well done, just that sentence while he checked the newspapers. I was quite chuffed. Annoying how little it takes when it's him. Wanted to tell my husband but it sounded less important once I said it out loud, so added the day's takings as supporting evidence. He said he'd heard the important part the first time. Dad still moved the crisps before leaving. Apparently public confidence and snack placement are separate measures of success.

My girlfriend was laughing about something that happened with her friends in Pretoria, and I kept waiting for the part where I would understand why it was funny. I know the names now, not the people. She was having such a good time telling it that I said shame and laughed in the right places, then felt a bit outside the whole thing. I'm glad she's made friends, obviously. I just miss being there when the thing happens, not getting the summary at eleven when we're both tired. She asked why I was quiet and I said long day. It was a long day, but that wasn't really the answer. Anyway, we stayed on the call until her battery went flat.

My daughter rang from Manchester to ask about something at work, then said she'd better go because she wanted to tell her friend the news. I was pleased she'd called me first, and then oddly disappointed that the call was already over. There wasn't anything else I needed to say. I just hadn't finished enjoying being included, which sounds rather pathetic written down. I nearly rang my mother afterwards and then remembered how often I look at the time when she starts telling me about her neighbours. Anyway, I did ring. She complained about her curtains for a good fifteen minutes and I was both glad and mildly irritated to be there.

A first-year student came back to the makerspace and asked if I could show his friend what he'd printed. He'd been so nervous the first time that he apologised before every question, and now he was explaining the whole thing, including the mistake we'd fixed. I was really happy for him, probably grinning more than the situation required. Then he said I'd made it less scary to come in, which caught me off guard. I said no problem, man, and immediately wished I'd said something better. It wasn't no problem, exactly. It was one of the best parts of my week. I told my grandmother at dinner and she wanted to know what the object actually did. Fair question. Mostly it holds a phone.
