Mein Sohn rief an, weil er wissen wollte, wie ich früher die langen Fahrten mit uns Kindern organisiert habe. Ich wollte gerade zu einer meiner Geschichten ansetzen, da sagte er, nein, wirklich, was habt ihr eingepackt und wann seid ihr losgefahren? Das hat mich gefreut. Er wollte etwas von mir wissen, nicht nur meinen Bericht höflich zu Ende hören. Leider stellte sich heraus, dass meine Frau den größten Teil organisiert hatte. Ich konnte immerhin die Pausenplätze nennen. Später fragte ich sie nach den Details und sie lachte ziemlich lange. Die Antwort habe ich ihm trotzdem geschickt, mit ihrem Namen darunter.

Anak perempuan saya menunjukkan tugas sekolahnya, tulisannya rapi sekali sampai saya baca dua kali dengan lambat. Dia menunggu sambil menjelaskan gambar di pinggir kertas, tidak sadar bapaknya sedang bangga sekali. Saya bilang bagus, lalu tanya apakah gurunya sudah lihat. Sesudah dia pergi saya masih pegang bukunya. Dulu ibu saya juga menyimpan ijazah SMP begitu baik, padahal saya sudah ingin terus melaut. Senang melihat anak suka sekolah, tapi ada rasa kecil seperti tertinggal kalau dia menjelaskan kata yang saya tidak tahu. Tidak saya katakan padanya. Saya minta dia baca lagi bagian yang paling dia suka, supaya bisa ikut mendengar dengan benar.

kid wants a birthday cake with a wrestling ring and ive been looking at pictures thinking i can do that. then i see the ropes on these things and remember im a cook not a damn engineer. wife said buy the little figures and keep the cake simple. probably right. i know what flavor she likes, thats the part i can handle without six videos. made a drawing on the back of an envelope and the kid added about twenty wrestlers, now its a fire code problem. gonna try a small one first so im not building turnbuckles at two in the morning before her party. already know mom is gonna have an opinion about the frosting.

dad came over while i was under the truck and stayed after we finished, just sitting in the drive talking bullpen like usual. the kid brought him a chair without anybody asking. he told her good job and she went back inside looking like shed won something. made me happy as hell, those two getting along without me putting a whole visit together. mom called asking where he was and he said working on the truck. technically we had been. wife came out and caught us with the hood already shut, so that story was over. we all ate together after. nothing big happened, which was kind of the good part.

Une ancienne collègue de l'armée m'a appelée pour demander des nouvelles, sans panne ni papier à retrouver. On a parlé d'un repas raté en déplacement, pas de grands souvenirs de service, et j'ai ri plus fort que d'habitude. Après l'appel, la maison m'a paru bien vide. Je ne regrette ni les horaires ni les départs imposés. Ce qui me manque, c'est de pouvoir raconter la moitié d'une histoire à quelqu'un qui connaît déjà l'autre moitié. Ma fille m'aurait écoutée aussi, mais il aurait fallu présenter tout le monde. J'ai proposé à cette collègue de venir un week-end. Elle a dit oui, sans date encore. Pour une fois je n'ai pas sorti le calendrier dans la minute.

My sister talked me into the batting cages and I spent the first round missing pitches I was already convinced I'd hit. My hands remembered where to go faster than the rest of me did, which was honestly insulting. Once I stopped swinging at everything I got a few solid ones and could feel the ball right through the bat, that really good clean hit where your arms don't sting. I wanted another round immediately. Now I'm home trying to take my sweatshirt off without lifting both elbows at once, so apparently retired softball star is the correct job title. My sister keeps offering to help in the most annoying helpful voice possible.

Im Lager hat ein junger Kollege gefragt, ob ich früher wirklich Autos gebaut habe. War ehrlich gemeint, keine dumme Bemerkung, und ich war gleich sauer. Als wäre das eine Geschichte aus dem Museum. Hab ihm nur gesagt, wie lange ich bei Opel war, und weitergemacht. Hinterher tat mir der Ton leid, er kann ja nichts dafür, dass ich bei dem Thema so werde. Zu Hause fragte Petra, was los ist, und ich hab mich über die Arbeit beschwert. Dabei war der Tag in Ordnung. Manchmal reicht eine normale Frage und ich bin wieder bei diesem letzten Tag im Werk. Ich hatte gedacht, das wäre inzwischen erledigt. Ist es wohl nicht ganz.

I looked again at the judges' comments on last year's quilt instead of assuming they simply preferred somebody else's colors. There's a specific note about the border not lying flat, and now I've measured it I can see what they meant. At work I will happily track an error back through three screens of documentation. In my sewing room I apparently prefer the explanation that taste is mysterious and judges are peculiar. I don't have to agree with everything they said, but this is something I can fix. Took out a small section to test it and made a mess of the first seam. Not a promising photograph, but more useful than staring at the honorable mention ribbon.

Eine neue Fahrerin wollte wissen, ob ich ihr die schwierigen Hauseingänge irgendwo aufschreiben kann. Im Kopf habe ich sie alle, auf Papier lande ich bei Beschreibungen wie der Eingang hinter dem traurigen Busch, und dann sehe ich das Problem. Ich könnte kleine Skizzen machen, Hof, Durchgang, Klingeln, ohne irgendwas Privates zu notieren. Dafür müsste ich nicht in die Disposition wechseln und hätte trotzdem mal wieder einen Grund zu zeichnen. Hab schon zwei auf dem Handy versucht. Die sehen eher nach Fluchtplan für eine Ameise aus, aber man erkennt, welche Tür gemeint ist. Vielleicht erst testen, bevor ich das große Handbuch ankündige.

Pulang shift gue duduk sebentar di teras, kucing malah naik ke paha kayak bayar kontrakan di situ. Badannya anget, berat juga sekarang, padahal tiap gue beli ikan pada bilang jangan dimanjain. Gue mau berdiri dia kagak pindah, jadi kaki dilurusin sambil minum kopi yang udah dingin. Baru kerasa telapak kaki masih panas habis jalan dari jalan raya, kuping juga masih kebawa bunyi truk. Si Teras nawarin kursinya yang ada sandaran, gue bilang sini aja. Lima menit jadi setengah jam. Pas kucing turun paha kesemutan, hewan kagak tahu terima kasih, enak dia bisa tidur kapan aja.
