Mum asked whether I actually want to go on another date with the man I've been messaging, or whether I just want to prove my schedule isn't impossible. Very inconvenient question over dinner. I had been comparing his free evenings with my early starts as if the right combination would tell me whether I liked him. We had a decent conversation last time, nothing terrible, nothing I keep remembering either. Maybe that's normal and not every meeting needs a big feeling. But if I'm mostly relieved whenever we can't find a time, that's information too. Haven't replied yet. I can plan six lessons faster than one coffee.

Istri menyisihkan satu rak kecil di warung untuk buku saya, katanya daripada tamu duduk melihat saya membaca terus. Saya senang sekali sampai langsung mengambil beberapa buku dari rumah, lalu agak tersinggung juga waktu dia bilang jangan yang bau apek. Memang ada yang bau, tetapi isinya bagus, masa harus disembunyikan. Akhirnya kami pilih bersama dan dia memasang kertas boleh baca di sini. Sore ada anak tetangga duduk lama dengan buku binatang, tidak beli apa-apa. Istri malah memberi air minum. Saya suka sekali melihatnya begitu, walaupun kalau saya bilang pasti dijawab, sudah, cuci gelasnya dulu.

Mi padre ha cambiado de sitio un ramo que yo había dejado en el escaparate y me ha sentado fatal, aunque desde la calle quizá se viera mejor donde lo puso él. No era una cuestión de luz en ese momento, era entrar y encontrar otra vez su decisión encima de la mía. He estado seco con él durante el café y enseguida me ha dado culpa, porque viene todas las mañanas y un día no vendrá. Xe, ya estoy convirtiendo un enfado pequeño en una desgracia futura. El enfado sigue siendo pequeño, pero es mío. Dejé el ramo donde estaba para no empezar una discusión delante de una clienta y eso también me ha dado rabia.

My sister borrowed twenty pounds and forgot to mention it when we met for choir. I wasn't desperate for it back that minute, but I did feel a bit fed up when she talked about something she'd bought. Then I got annoyed with myself for quietly counting her money while she was telling me a perfectly ordinary story. I asked her afterward and she said she'd forgotten, looked genuinely sorry, and sent it over while we were standing there. So that was that. Much less interesting than the argument I had briefly started having in my head. We walked to the tram together and sang the bit we'd both got wrong, badly enough that somebody smiled. Fine evening in the end.

جاءني حفيدي بصورة قديمة من الشركة وسأل عن رجل يقف بجانبي، فقلت اسمه واسم أبيه ومتى التحق بالعمل قبل أن يسأل السؤال الثاني. سررت بدهشته، ولا أدّعي غير ذلك. ثم قال: أريد أن أعرف لماذا كنتم تضحكون في الصورة. هنا توقفت؛ أعرف تاريخ المناسبة وأسماء الواقفين، ولا أذكر النكتة التي جعلتنا نميل بعضنا على بعض. أحزنني هذا النقص الصغير أكثر مما ينبغي. ظلّ حفيدي ينظر إلى الصورة ثم قال إنني أبدو سعيدًا فيها. نعم، كنت سعيدًا، وأعجبني أنه رآني هكذا، لا رجلًا يحفظ أسماء الراحلين فقط. أبقيت الصورة عندي بعد أن وعدته بإعادتها الجمعة.

My grandson sent a message saying he still hadn't heard back from the family who might know our old cook in Dar. I replied not to worry, these things take time, wisdom from the man who checked the page before brushing his teeth. I felt foolishly disappointed, as if the boy had promised me an answer today. He has done more than I managed in years. What frightens me a little is how much I want somebody there to remember the same man I remember, not just a name that looks right on a screen. Madam asked whether I was quiet because of the search. I said yes, for once without improving the answer with a joke. She sat beside me until I started talking again.

My daughter came over with food and did not ask whether I was happy. We ate and she told me about a woman at work who keeps moving things on a shared desk. It was not much of a story. I liked hearing it. She washed two plates before she left, although I had told her to leave them. The house was quiet again afterward. I was glad she had come and glad I had not had to explain anything. I put the leftover food in the refrigerator. There was enough for the meal before my next shift. She had remembered I would need it without making that the reason for the visit.

Ma camarade a mis une chanson sur son téléphone et on s'est mises à danser dans la chambre, juste le temps qu'elle me montre un pas que je faisais à l'envers. Je pensais avoir trop mal aux jambes après la journée pour bouger encore, mais là je ne portais rien et personne n'attendait que je termine une tâche. Ça changeait tout. J'avais chaud et je riais tellement que je perdais le rythme, elle aussi à force de me regarder. Après on a bu de l'eau assises par terre, nos dos contre le lit. J'entendais encore mon souffle. Mes fiches de cours étaient sur la chaise, elles ont attendu que je puisse les lire sans que les mots sautent.

caminar por la rambla con viento me dejó la cara fría y el resto del cuerpo bastante contento. salí con el hombro duro del local y al principio seguía llevándolo levantado, como si todavía sostuviera una valija. después me di cuenta y lo aflojé. llevaba las manos en los bolsillos y tenía que sacarlas cada tanto para acomodarme el pelo, imposible ver algo. no fui hasta donde había pensado porque empezaron a rozarme los zapatos atrás. en casa me saqué las medias y puse los pies en la baldosa. la gata vino a olerlos con una seriedad tremenda. ocho horas vendiendo equipaje y la parte buena del día fue andar sin llevar nada.

Istri ingin rak sepatu kecil di dekat pintu, saya langsung bilang bisa bikin dari papan sisa. Setelah diukur ternyata ruangnya sempit karena malam motor masuk juga, kalau raknya terlalu dalam pintu tidak bisa dibuka penuh. Dari tadi saya menggambar tiga bentuk di belakang amplop, padahal tinggal beli yang ramping mungkin selesai. Tapi kalau bikin sendiri bisa pas dan papan di bawah televisi akhirnya terpakai. Sepupu usul raknya digantung agak tinggi, masuk akal, asal tidak kena setang. Besok saya ukur lagi waktu motor sudah di dalam. Lucu juga, di sekolah bisa mengatur satu ruangan untuk rapat, di rumah kalah sama enam pasang sandal dan satu helm.
