Mom remembered which coffee I like. Very small event, not a headline. She had ordered it before I got there and was sitting with both cups, apologizing because mine might be getting cold. I felt this sudden ridiculous urge to cry and then got annoyed with myself for making a normal coffee date complicated in my head. We mostly talked about her neighbor's fence. It was fine. Better than fine, probably, but I don't want every good visit to become proof that everything between us is repaired. I can be glad she remembered and still want to go home after an hour. Both happened today.

Walked past a building I'd known before the quakes and tried to remember the old shopfront without mentally filling it in from photos. Couldn't do it cleanly. I can remember waiting there with Mum, the feeling of the pavement under my shoes, but the glass I picture keeps changing. It's odd knowing the repaired windows better than the ones I grew up with. At work I like an opening I can measure. With memory there's no useful second reading to take, you just keep getting your latest version back. I was going to ask Mum, then got distracted by something in the new window. I'll probably remember to ask while I'm somewhere completely different.

I'm trying to plan a Saturday that doesn't require all five of us to enjoy the same thing at the same time. The oldest wants to go somewhere, the youngest considers buying apples an outing, and I keep seeing pictures of these beautiful family activities that apparently involve matching jackets. We have jackets. They just don't match! I started a list of places and then looked at how much of the day would be driving. Maybe breakfast somewhere and an afternoon at home would count. I'm leaving the calendar square empty until we decide, which shouldn't feel as unfinished as it does.

I am preparing for my appraisal and the draft is again full of team results, with my own work hidden inside them. The manager should know who handled those escalations, but that sentence has not helped in the last two promotion cycles. I can clearly explain a fault to an angry client; apparently explaining why I could lead a team is much harder. Wrote down three examples of training freshers and kept wanting to add that anyone would have done the same. Anyone did not. That sounds arrogant even here, but it is also accurate. My wife has offered to read the draft after dinner and I am trying not to soften every line before she sees it.
In biology we were talking about seeds and now I want to try growing the same kind in two different spots at home. Dad asked what I wanted to find out, and I said which would grow better, but that isn't very specific. Taller doesn't always look healthier. I also wanted to change the soil, which would mean I wouldn't know whether the spot mattered or the soil did. This is why a simple idea takes up a whole page once a teacher gets involved, except this time I did it myself. I'm drawing a little chart with room for pictures. My brother wants to name the plants before we've even planted them.

After football I sat outside our room because I was too hot to go straight inside, shirt wet down the back and my legs still wanting to move even when I had stopped. I had run plenty without doing much useful with the ball, chale, at least nobody can accuse me of resting. When I finally washed, the water over my head felt better than the whole match. Then the hunger came properly, not the small one I ignore between lectures, and I ate slowly because the food was hot. My thighs are heavy now when I stand up, but sitting by the window with a full stomach feels good. I was going to read my notes and have been on the same line for some time.
