A woman brought in her mum's coats today and kept telling me which one was the good one, as if I might miss it amongst the bags. I said we'd take care with them and she looked so relieved I felt a bit useless, standing there holding a coat hanger. After she'd gone I needed a minute in the back room. I still have the coat that looks like Granny's and can't imagine handing it across a counter to someone who might just call it stock. Usually I can make a joke and get on, but today I didn't fancy it. One of the volunteers made tea without asking what was wrong. We talked about the window instead, which was exactly enough.

One of the lads stayed behind to apologise for kicking off last week when I stopped his sparring. He'd brought it up himself, no parent stood behind him making faces. I said fair enough, next session we start again, then spent the rest of the evening proper chuffed about it. Sounds daft getting that much out of an apology, but I remember being his age and thinking backing down meant everyone had beaten you. I nearly rang my old coach on the walk home, just out of habit, before remembering I can't. Been years now. Told my girlfriend instead and she listened through the whole explanation, even the boxing bits she already knows.

Mum took me round Kejetia to look for a particular cloth and somehow her legs did not receive the message that we had been walking for two hours. I was sweating under my bag and kept changing which shoulder carried it, while she was greeting people as if she had just arrived. At one stall we sat down and the woman put a little fan towards my face, ei, I could have stayed there until closing. The cool air dried the sweat at my temples and suddenly I noticed how hungry I was. Bought food before we continued. Mum said the young one needed refuelling, meanwhile she ate half my egg oo.

Four dogs, damp wind, Rivelin. The descent was slippery enough that I kept my steps short and felt it in my thighs by the bottom, more than in the knee for once. Back at the van I took my gloves off and my hands were steaming faintly in the cold air. Hadn't noticed how warm I'd got under the coat. The first mouthful of tea was too hot, the second about right, and I stood there with it while the dogs settled into their crates. By the time I got home my cheeks felt tight from the wind. The lad said I looked sunburnt. Told him Sheffield had made a special arrangement. Boots off was the best part of the evening.

Band practice was excellent until we reached the bit where you're apparently meant to possess enough air for the entire phrase, rather than my preferred system of starting confidently and hoping some more arrives! Came off with my lips buzzing and tried explaining a quiz question to my partner while half my mouth still belonged to the cornet. She understood about four words and one of those was PUB. Fair assessment. Had a mug of tea and sat quiet for a minute because making noise had actually become a physical effort, a rare medical event in this cottage. By the time she'd put her shoes away I was ready to tell her the whole rehearsal, including the bit she'd already heard through the wall.
